HCA 430: Special Population Text: Burkholder, D. M., & Nash, N. B. (2013).

Special populations in health care Review your classmates' post. Provide a substantive response (minimum of 100 words) to your peer. How does your understanding of cultural inclusivity compare and/or contrast to that of your peer? Jamie The specific refugee population I have chosen to focus on is Syrian refugees.

In syria, more than 4 million people are refugees. Syrian culture focuses on the importance of respect, self-discipline, education and family. The family unit is the most important pillar of society with responsibility to family an essential norm. A community-oriented approach to health policy remembers that a person's well-being is significantly affected by family, friends, and other social factors. Community-oriented health policy works to improve health outcomes by making changes on a community level. To do this, community members should be consulted about the needs of their communities and the daily risks encountered there. (Burkholder, D. M., & Nash, N. B. (2013). 10.1)

A market-oriented approach means that it relies on competition between care providers to strive for quality and control cost. (site textbook 10.2) A market- oriented approach also has to meet the needs of health care consumers, who might not know enough about what they need because of uncertainty of health and outcomes, along with a sense that asking questions means questioning doctors' authority. (Burkholder, D. M., & Nash, N. B. (2013).10.2) Multidisciplinary care is an integrated team approach to healthcare. The evaluation of treatment options and treatment planning are collaborative processes involving medical and allied healthcare professionals in connection with the patient and the patient's family. For syrian refugees, access to healthcare varies depending heavily on whether a refugee lives in a camp or in an urban informal settlement. After coming to the United States, Syrian refugees can arrive with experiences of extreme trauma that impact both physical and mental health.

Health care providers and social services in the United States have a responsibility to build better protections for the refugee population, including improving their access to health care through more programs, greater support, empowerment, accompaniment, and a deeper understanding of their needs. In my community, there are no specifically designed program for Syrian refugees but there are many other resources and programs for help. Aside from donating money to different organizations that help these refugees, people can also become a volunteer at refugee centers where they help refugees understand tasks such as opening a bank account, finding a good doctor, etc. Burkholder, D. M., & Nash, N. B. (2013).

Over the past decade, immigrations numbers in the United States has increased at record levels. They are five times more than those who were born in the United States population (Krogstad & Keegan, 2014). Currently, four states have one in five or more people that are foreign born which is California, Florida, New Jersey, and New York, (Krogstad & Keegan, 2014). In the year 1992, Latin America and Europe were considered the most legal immigrants in the United States. Through the year records are showing a rise in Asia, and African decent is migrating to America, (Krogstad & Keegan, 2014).

Along with the increase of immigration status, it allows for more infectious diseases to come over in this country also. The CDC acknowledges the risk of infectious diseases but does not exclusive direct it totally on undocumented immigrants. These communicable diseases can be contained and limit contact risk through vaccination. Providing, some form of health care for the undocumented immigrant is essential for the wellness of the community and immigrant. They must feel safe enough to take advantage of any health resources provide to protect their health and the community.

Some organizations take great measure to provide medical benefits to the growing g population. A few programs that provide medical options to immigrants are student health plans through colleges and universities. A few other programs that provide coverage are private Medicare, health coverage, and employer- based health insurance (Zamosky, L. 2014). Also, there is low cost, or free clinic is the local community area for the insurer that will grant medical services on the sliding scale. This program will be known as State-based health programs or Healthy Way L.A. Unmatched insurance (Zamosky, L. 2014).
