Guidelines for Choosing a Topic

The field is pretty open, but there are some requirements and limitations:

1.The topic should be a figure, place, item, or event that was known before 1600 CE (common era, aka "AD"); in other words, European Renaissance or earlier, in order to fit in with the scope of the class

2.The figure, place, or event should NOT be central to a current major world religion: this is meant to help avoid potential issues of religious conflict or bias; for instance, the historicity of the Biblical Jesus is much debated, and it's simpler to avoid running into areas where someone's beliefs might be insulted or called into question; likewise, it is advisable to take care if considering a god, since many gods are static figures who do not survive the cultures that created them, rather than dynamic figures who are adapted to the needs of new cultures

3.The project should focus primarily on the figure, place, or event's LEGENDARY and MYTHOLOGICAL status, not historical reality: it's fine to choose a figure or event that is historically verified, but the project should focus primarily on the figure/event in myth and legend; Alexander the Great is a good example of this as he was definitely a historical figure, but he has grown into a legendary figure with plenty of fictional stories about him as well

4.The figure, place, or event can come from any area of the world, and groups are strongly encouraged to go looking for figures and events with which they're less familiar and/or from cultures with which they are less familiar
