Guided Writing Questions

These questions will help you focus on the problem and have enough support. Paste them into another Word and answer each one fully using the research you have collected for the annotated bib. If you spend time to fully answer each of these questions, putting your report together should be easy.

Prompt -Cancer Research

This topic uses a feasibility report format which is a little bit different from the incident report or the recommendation report. Your purpose is determine whether the company should move ahead with supporting this research. This topic uses the scientific method more than the others.

1. What is the research question that you will be trying to answer for your client?

2. Briefly describe the history behind the theory that radiowaves may be a key to curing cancer. Talk about Kanzuis, his motivation, and what research he has conducted (300words).

3. Where is this research now? Review the literature on this topic and summarize the results of this research. This is the main part of your paper and should be fully documented using only peer reviewed articles (800words).

4. Using the information you received from #3, writeyour recommendations on whether or not, based on the research available, you believe your client should invest in this project (300words)

John Kanzius, after facing the grueling experience in the treatment of cancer, invented a method that he claimed could cure cancer with no side effects and without surgery. This treatment combines gold or carbon nanoparticles with radio waves. Ideally, these waves destroy cancerous cells in the body leaving healthy cells relatively unharmed (Simon, 2009). Kanzius research was taken over by Dr. Steven A. Curley from cancer center. Dr. Curley was using copper needles to inject and burn tumors in cancer treatments. Kanzius reached out and suggested the new method that was less abrasive. He tested the methodology that Kanzius invented and it brought remarkable results. The research center injected nanoparticles into tumors in mice and rats then proceeded to burn the tumors, and it burned all cancerous cells thoroughly. It has also been tried on pigs, and the animals showed no side effects to the treatment (Dooley, 2002). He promised Kanzius his invention would not die with him. Doctor Steven saw endless potential in the invention and worked on improving the machine. Other scientists have developed this machine that it can detect cancerous cells or even point out someone at risk of getting cancer. As of May this year, the doctor filed protocols to allow human test subjects on the radio wave machine. When the treatment gets approval from the food and drug administration, it will be used to cure patients in the US. However, there is a lawsuit halting all these developments. It was filed by Baylor school medicine against NeoTherma oncology of Kansas which owns the patent on the usage of the machine (Binder, 2010). The lawsuit states that NeoTherma did not provide 9 million needed to take the machine to human trials. Baylor school accused the center of failing the people who contributed towards research on the machine.

The Kanzius cancer machine is a promising invention, and I think cancer research foundation should finance what is left of the project. Hopefully, the lawsuit could be resolved positively, and this could be good news for a number of people waiting for this invention.

Radio waves commonly known as radiation therapy use high-energy radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells. X-rays, gamma rays, and charged particles are types of radiation used for cancer treatment. Kanzius' contribution is a radio frequency transmitter of his own design that excites metal nanoparticles inserted into cancer cells.

When exposed to radio waves these nano particles generate tiny localized bursts of heat that kill cancer cells without harming adjacent tissues. The technique has so far been tested only in laboratory experiments with cultured cancer cells and animal models.

The systematic review provided evidence of significant benefit for the use of radio waves as treatment for patients with cancer and raised some concerns about safety. Subsequent examination of the clinical data and the data matching study provided evidence of improved survival and symptom control, and in fact showed improved survival for people with breast cancer or prostate cancer.

Therefore, there appears to be a current justification for further research at present on the use of radio waves for the treatment of patients with cancer. Hence, cancers can the treated using radio waves at a good price because it has been clearly proven that the effects are negligible compared to the benefits and efficiencies in the use of it.
