Given is history writing assignment.

Paper Instruction

The goal of the essay is for you to think the nature of urban life over the course the 19th and 20th (and early 21st) centuries (in other words, to reflect upon and analyze some of the themes of our course this semester).

What did it mean to live in major cities such as London, Paris, and Chicago in the 19th and 20th centuries, and how did life change over time?

A few questions/guidelines to ponder:
• Think about the entirety of the semester (in other words, this is different than the last essay so don't rehash it).

• Think about the social dimensions of living in the city (life in urban centers versus suburbs, rich versus poor, ethnic divisions versus more integrated lifestyles, the more distant past versus more recent, evolution of shopping, etc).

• What did it mean to live in the cities in good times? In bad?

• Think about how infrastructure developed over times including beyond the essays we had back in September.

• You can integrate anything we've used this semester: films, documentaries, documents, articles, or books.

General Guidelines:
• Essays should be 1000 words (slightly over or under will not bring down the wrath of the gods. 700 words, or 1500 words, on the other hand, might be , to borrow from Goldilocks, "this essay is too short, this essay is too long).

• Essays should be double spaced and paginated

• Essays should be clearly written, well organized, and with clear introduction and conclusion.

• Essays should utilize the sources from the class including articles, lectures, and primary documents

o You can cite using MLA or APA or CMS styles. Most people use a version of MLA (in text citation) where one put ‘s the author and page number at the end of the sentence (for example: (Schivelbusch, 141)).
o For lectures (Fischer, Week #x) will suffice.
o You should cite materials when you borrow ideas or information from a text, when you paraphrase, or when you directly cite something (that is borrow word for word). See below for further explanation
o If you do intext citations, you should have "works cited" or "bibliography
o When do I cite?

• Quotations must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.

• Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it slightly.

• Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source. Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a broad overview of the source material.
