GEOGRAPHY PROGRAM ASSIGNMENT: TERM PAPER

Write a Term Paper about Economic Geography.

1. OUTLINE (due February 8th)-

From the list of essay topics, select one topic and prepare an essay outline. It MUST be typed and it must be handed in no later than the date noted above. It MUST consist of the following:

a. Title page (as it would appear on the final essay)
b. A Table of Contents (as it would appear in the final essay)
c. A one-page introduction to the topic
d. A bibliography (as it would appear in the final essay)

You should research your chosen topic with care; it will form the basis of your major term paper. You are expected to consult periodicals and, where relevant, government documents as well as books in order to prepare your topic. You should use the services of Interlibrary Loan.

You are expected to consult with me for needed advice.

2. PAPER (due April 5th)-

2.1 Format

1. The essay MUST be typed and should be no more than 10 pages in length. (exclusive of maps, diagrams, appendices etc.)

2. It MUST include relevant maps, diagrams, data in tabular form, graphs, etc.

3. It MUST include the following:

Title page
Table of Contents
Introduction
Brief literature review
Method(s) used
Presentation and analysis of data Conclusion/summary
Bibliography
Appendix (if any).

4. It MUST be written in acceptable English and MUST should follow accepted academic convention with regard to footnotes, bibliography, etc.

5. It MUST be handed in on time. Marks will be deducted for lateness. /2 Essay Topics (choose one)

1. The major locational characteristics of fast food chains or gas stations.

2. The likely impacts on Prince George's economy of the extension of the CNR line to Whitehorse (pay particular attention to impacts on the transportation sector).

3. The "journey to shop" and retail location in Prince George.

4. A spatial analysis of light industry in Prince George.

5. The particular locational problems and spatial distribution of agriculture in northern B.C.

6. The C.B.D. vs. suburban shopping malls: pros and cons.

7. An analysis of Prince George's C.B.D.

8. The contribution of transportation t Prince George's economy.

9. Locational factors affecting tourism the Prince George region.

10. The major locational characteristics of "big box" retailers such as Costco, the Real Canadian Superstore, Wal-Mart etc.

11. A discussion of the merits and problems of "Instant Towns" (e.g. Tumbler Ridge, Mackenzie) with particular emphasis on the central interior of B.C.

12. The locational advantages and disadvantages of establishing a steel mill in Prince George.

13. The relative merits of the various statistical measures of economic development (with particular reference to less developed countries).

14. A spatial analysis of the location of public safety facilities (police stations, fire halls etc.) in Prince George.

15. Any other topic that you can persuade me to accept

NOTE: Modifications to these topics must be cleared with the Instructor.
