Focus on Wood Products

Week 1:

Choose a construction project with a scope that includes soil, concrete, masonry, wood, steel, and asphalt work; and seek your instructor's approval on the project you are going to work on.

Prepare a 2- to 3-page narrative describing the project and its objectives. The paper should also include the project scope of work with a focus on construction methods and materials used. Support your findings by using two additional peer-reviewed scholarly works.

Week 2:

For the project you chose to work on in Week 1, it is recommended that you gather adequate information about the soil(s) in the building. Please also research the topic further in preparation for the next rounds of submission. Submit a 3-page narrative that discusses the following:

Soil investigation performed onsite

The type of soil and sub-layers discovered

Challenges with the type of soil onsite and strategies to overcome these challenges

Support of excavation systems used, and why

The type of foundation system used, and why

Week 3:

Since you are will progressively develop your project based on each week's topic throughout the term, further develop your Portfolio Project with a focus on wood products. For the project you chose to work on in Week 1, prepare a minimum of a 3-page narrative (excluding supplemental pages such as cover page, table of contents, references, and appendices - if any) that discusses the following:

Specify if a heavy timber or light wood frame was used

The range of wood products in your construction project, and their types

Material selection criteria

Safety precautions taken in selection and use of the wood products

Construction methods and equipment used

Quality control methods used

Prepare your work using at least one of this week's required/recommended readings and two outside references (peer-reviewed, current scholarly article published in the last five years, references not to include required or recommended reading assignments or textbook).
