First homework.

We will watch a short documentary in class on Wednesday October 7 on the topic of poverty and then you will answer an essay type question at home in response to the documentary. You will be able to work on your written response over the weekend. Your response will be due on Canvas on Monday, October 12 by 11:59pm.

Responses should be around 2-3 pages (or 1000-1500 words) in length.
If you use the textbook in your answer (which is not compulsory), ensure that you fully reference it in your paper and in a bibliography accompanying the paper. Please spellcheck before submitting. You may use any font/style you like, so long as it is legible :)

How will the paper be assessed?

Papers will be assessed on depth of sociological analysis (eg: are relevant concepts understood, incorporated and analyzed) original/critical thought, and clarity of expression.
The following grading scale outlines the qualities of each grade:

A (90-100): Clearly articulated paper; no spelling errors or grammatical issues; answers the question fully and makes reference to the documentary, class notes and class discussions, especially concepts such as Intergenerational and Situation Poverty, upward mobility, and socio-economic class. May use the textbook (although this is not required), which is fully referenced in the paper and bibliography. Quality of argument is excellent, showing evidence of critical/analytical thought and familiarity with key theories and concepts. Meets basic criteria of word length.

B (80-89): Draws on the documentary and perhaps class notes in answer, including concepts such as Intergeneration and Situational Poverty, upward mobility and socio-economic class. Well written and answers all parts of the question. May be minor spelling/grammatical errors. Very good quality of argument, depth of analysis and critical thought. Meets basic criteria of word length.

C (70-79): Draws partly on the documentary to answer the question. May only answer part of the question, draws more heavily on anecdotal examples and personal examples in answer. Somewhat clear expression and some use of sociological concepts. May not meet word length.

D (65-69): Relies mostly on anecdotal evidence/personal experience to answer the question. Only answers part of the question. Poor expression and lack of supporting material. Lack of critical thought/analysis. Fails to meet word length.

F (64 and below): Fails to meet basic criteria of word length. Does not answer question, fails to use supporting material. Lack of critical thought.
