Final Project Stage 2: Interim Report

Stage 2 will be an interim report of the information you have so far gathered for your final project. You will use the list of companies from Stage 1 to begin your research with the goal of eventually narrowing it down to a final choice. In your interim report be sure to include:

• a list of which companies/corporations you have narrowed your search to include and why you have selected these companies/corporations over other options
• brief profiles of those companies/corporations
• discussion of any analysis that you have conducted to determine performance
• a comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of these companies/corporations as far as investment is concerned
• your final choice of which company you will be focusing on in the final paper, along with an explanation of your reasoning

Company/Corporation Research Proposal

1. Title of Project: Company/Corporation Research Proposal

2. Statement of Purpose: I will be conducting research on Coca Cola Corporation, Amazon Corporation, and Sony Corporation. Through brief analysis Amazon is showing strong profits.

3. Background: I use products from all 3 corporations on a daily basis. Coca-Cola sparked my interest as their profits have been suffering due to the increasing health consciousness of consumers. But they landed a deal with Major League Baseball (MLB) making Coca Cola the official drink of the MLB. This caused Pepsi to lose a huge amount of profits. Amazon interests me as they have changed the way society shops for products. No need to go out, just have Amazon deliver it to your door. Amazon has changed the whole way of how Generation Y and Millennials operate. Sony is fascinating as you do not here from them anymore except for one major product, PlayStation.

4. Significance: These 3 corporations are worth considering as they are or were profitable corporations at one point in time. What I hope to learn from these corporations is which is the best one to invest and profit off of. Currently stocks are down for Coca-Cola and Sony stocks are down, but Amazon stocks are up. It will be interesting to research, calculate, and analyze where to invest one's money and add to my knowledge on this topic as well as my fellow peers.

5. Description: The research I will be conducting is an interim report as well as a research paper. My research will include analysis and analysis of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheet, cash flow statements, and the statement of shareholder. Analysis of time value of money, opportunity cost of capital, and investment rules. Also, my research will include capital budgeting portfolio, shareholders , and capital structure analysis.

6. Methodology:

I will be using Nasdaq.com and yahoo finance to review and analyze financial statements and balance sheets from my three chosen corporations. Once I choose the final corporation, I will utilize the formulas and doctrine in The Corporate Finance textbook, by Berk and DeMarzo, to calculate and incorporate into my final analysis research paper and an interim report. I will also utilize accredited websites to assist me in my analysis.

7. Problems:

Due to my lack of knowledge, I expect to run into every problem imaginable. From unknown definitions and not comprehending formulas and definitions in the Corporate Finance Textbook to not finding information needed. My deductions are to use multiple sources of information to explain these formulas and definitions and spend over 60 hours analyzing the material needed to provide the information for my final analysis.
