Explanation of the FCC Mission and Vision Statement

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) governs mass media communication via, television, radio, wire, satellite and cable throughout 50 states and other surrounding areas. The mission of the FCC is to continuously improve their organizational infrastructure and to create a positive change within organizational business practices. According to Debra Wayne (1997) The FCC's mission statement was petitioned for an upgrade to integrate the company's overall strategic vision and plan for the future. The FCC's draft mission statement reads, "The Federal Communications Commission exists to encourage competition in communications and to promote and support access for every American citizen to existing and advanced telecommunications services. This mission is executed through the four primary Commission activities," (Wayne, 1997) the statement goes on to list the four activities aforementioned. The FCC's mission statement is a reflection on how the company desires to proceed with implementing change in a way that will benefit all shareholders, stakeholders, consumers, and administrative support staff.

The FCC regulates what is and is not acceptable speech on the air waves, the company takes into account young viewers and/or listeners to prevent derogatory offences. "The FCC regulates numerous activities of the electronic media by creating and evaluating policies and procedures. They also have the ability to levy fines and any suits against these media companies. They also oversee ownership limits, local marketing agreements, license renewal, and the transition to digital television. Overall, the FCC are the people who essentially manage the electronic media, and they are the people who set the tone for the media officials and companies in today's society of growing electronic media." (Leary, 2006). The FCC is known for their applicable censorship on television and via telephone lines.
