Explain the difference between transitional and transformational change.

Transitional change is a change made to replace existing processes with new processes. On the other hand, transformational change is a change made to completely reshape a business strategy and processes, often resulting in a shift in work culture.

As opposed to transformational change, transitional change is more difficult to implement, and tends to increase employees’ discomfort.

During the transitional phase where old systems and processes are broken down, and new ones are set in place, the outcome is usually one where employees feel uneasy.

At this moment, one needs to consider the following:

Ensure that staff know their jobs are secure.

Communicate the benefits foreseen as a result of such change.

Incorporate the ideas of the employees while making changes.

Keep staff updated and guide them through the change being made.

On the contrary, transformational change may be a response to extreme or unexpected market changes. Due to this change, staff may feel a sense of fear, doubt and insecurity. Transformational change also comprises of both transitional and developmental change.

Factors to consider when making transformational change:

Involve staff throughout the process.

Reinforce the rationale for the change.

Plan new business systems and approaches.
