Explain the 1-2-3 pattern of organizing information with the help of an example

In order for a presentation to be effective, it requires structured and organized information that will keep the audience interested and engaged. The presentation will serve as a blue print to the presenter and gives him or her focus and direction, and allows the reader to easily follow the pattern of the presentation, understand and remember the information.

It is recommended when preparing a presentation to start with a credible argument, then chose the middle part to introduce less persuasive points and finish up with a strong point. It is also important to be prepared to answer questions to back up your argument. Another effective way to a good presentation is to use one of the five patterns of organization, the 123 pattern; pick three important topics and talk about them. For example, during our last monthly staff meetings, our principal had a lot of information to cover in a short time before our students started coming in the door. She used short and effective power points to share important information. The power point presentation was about our school performance compared to other schools in the district. The main topics covered were teachers' performance, and student's performance and behavior. The presentation was very effective, easy to follow and understand, and not too technical.

Most often those making presentations organize their message using a direct pattern. The presenter is frequently facing an audience that is reluctant. In today's faced-paced world, particularly on the business scene, listeners are in a hurry. The presenter has a small window of time to make key points and gather support from their listeners. As we spoke about earlier, the "K I S S" or "keep it simple" method of expressing ourselves is an effective approach.

As a presenter, you need to first be honest with your audience about your goal. Then your techniques should convince your audience that the goal meets their needs, too. Your presentation should begin with your strongest point and best reason.

One of the five standard patterns of organization that will work well in delivering a persuasive presentation is the 1-2-3 pattern or approach. This is a great choice in the business world where short, informative meetings are frequent. In delivering this approach, you will discuss three aspects of your topic. For example you may state, "Good afternoon, everyone. I want to get right to the point, because I have great news to share. Today we will review last month's sales, last month's expenses, and last month's net profit." This hypothetical statement just illustrated the presenter's overview of the points they will make, as well. That, too is an effective means of capturing the audience's attention.

Your weakest point should be expressed in the middle and your presentation should end on a strong point, as well. Leaving your audience with a strong and positive thought to ponder is a great way to conclude your message (Locker 2013).
