Explain dominant conceptions of gender which shaped lives of American women in each of three periods examined in this semester. Describe how Patriarchy dictated how women lived in era 1490-1750 (as exemplified - or challenged - by Mary Rowlandson). Describe changes (in practice or theory) that idea of "Republican Motherhood" wrought in women's lives in era 1750-1815 (use real Susanna Rowson, and fictitious Charlotte Temple as examples). At last, to what extent does Alexis de Tocqueville explain American women as free in era 1815-1860? Why did women play such prominent role in reform and abolitionism?
