Examination and Interpretation of Patterns for Reconstruction

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Distinguish between reconstruction and individualization patterns.
2. Identify some of the major patterns used for reconstruction.
3. Interpret blood spatters evidence.
4. Summarize the forensic value of glass evidence.
5. Understand the reconstruction patterns of glass evidence (direction of impact, sequence of impacts).

• Complete the following writing assignments:

Part A: Answer the following review questions -

1. What is the difference between individualization patterns and reconstruction patterns?

2. How is reconstruction patterns collected?

3. What are low, medium and high velocity blood patterns? What types of events are likely to produce them?

4. What can the shape of a dried blood droplet pattern tell you about the angle of impact?

5. What can be learned from glass fracture patterns?

6. What are gunshot residue patterns used for?

Part B: Address the following questions (worth up to 15 points):

1. Provide a brief explanation of terminal velocity (as it pertains to blood spatter). (Use the Internet and key word searching.)

2. Provide a brief description of a blood droplet at a 90-degree angle versus a 25-degree angle (in other words, describe the appearance of the blood droplet at a 90-degree angle and a 25-degree angle) Refer to your textbook and the Internet using key word searching).

3. Briefly explain how the appearance of a blood droplet (or spatter) helps with reconstructing the crime event (also refer to video, textbook)?

Part C: Optional - Video on the Science of Murder / Blood Spatter. This is a news video on how police use blood spatter in solving crimes (5.39 minutes). Video can be found in the Course Video folder.
