Essay:

Part A: Identify and critically discuss the key factors that can inhibit the phase of globalisation. What is (are) the most crucial barrier(s) to globalisation?

Part B: Select a country that is ranked below 70th position in the Depth Index of Globalisation (Figure 6.1 in page 87).

You should not choose a country where you originate from or currently live. From the factors that you have identified in part A, what is (are) the most crucial barrier(s) that inhibit its external integration with the rest of the world Globalisation, the process that refers to the growth of integration and inter-dependencies between national markets and industries on a worldwide scale, represents one of the most powerful levers available for boosting growth. Although many believe that the process of globalization has accelerated over the past decades, there is a growing disagreement about whether globalization is deepening or diminishing. Some scholars such as Ghemawat and Altman (2013) have been very sceptic about the present state and phase of globalization. In the Depth Index of Globalisation, Ghemawat and Altman (2013) claim that the world is less deeply interconnected in 2012 than it was in 2007. They also claim that the extent of external integration of a country differs significantly from country to country, some countries, emerging economies in particular, being far less integrated than that is commonly believed. In this essay, you need to review the academic literature and identify (and discuss) factors that can inhibit the phase of globalisation. These factors could range from, but not limited to, various distances and differences between countries, protectionism measures, crossnational diversity such as language and culture etc. Then you need to critically evaluatethese factors and determine the most crucial barrier(s) of globalisation. In the second part, you need to select a country based on the criteria given above. From the factors that you have identified above, you need to evaluate the most crucial barrier(s) that inhibit its external integration with the rest of the world, while clearly justifying your case.
