Essay Assignment
In a short essay (1-page, single-spaced, 12-point font) critically respond to one of our class readings. This will involve, first, a summary of a specific line of thought from the text, and second, a considered reaction to this line of thought. Reactions may take the form of objections to the author's position or further elaborations of the author's ideas, perhaps in response to a possible objection. Each essay should engage with a different class text.

Style, Grammar, and Organization- Exemplary papers will have a clear focus that emerges early in the paper and is carried through to its end. Each sentence will follow logically from the sentence that precedes it, and each paragraph will come together as a unified whole. Exemplary papers will have few to zero stylistic or grammatical errors.
Quality of Engagement with the Primary Text- Exemplary papers will demonstrate serious engagement with the primary text by accurately represent the author's position and properly citing the author's words in evidence of the interpretation offered. Quotations and paraphrases in exemplary papers will be introduced and fully explained, with the author's words placed in the context of the paper's own account of what is going on in the text.
Quality of Response to the Primary Text- Exemplary papers will articulate a single line of thinking in response to something specific in the primary text and will give clear reasons for responding as they do. Exemplary papers will also keep in mind potential objections to the position they take in their response to the primary text.
