Each student, individually, is required to write a 2500 word sociological discussion paper (excluding bibliography) on a contemporary social issue of interest to Planning. This may be an issue covered in the tutorial program or another issue that you are interested in. For your discussion paper you will need to construct a title that provides a clear indication of the overall theme(s) and focus of your paper (e.g. Social Mix Policies in Australian Social Housing Urban Regeneration; Community Power in a Cosmopolitan City: Urban Regeneration and Class Conflict in Port Adelaide etc.). To analyse and make sense of the issue your discussion you must adopt a sociological standpoint or perspective that you are comfortable with (e.g. feminist, critical theory, Marxist, structuralist, post-structuralist) on the topic that you select. Information on sociological perspectives can be found in the recommended textbooks or in any of the many Sociology textbooks available in the library. Please state clearly what your sociological standpoint / perspective is and why you have chosen it. You must also provide a brief rationale in your paper on why you have selected your social issue.
