Timothy,

In our reading this week at the start of our textbook we are introduced into healthcare management as a whole. The question is what exactly does a person with the title of "Healthcare Manager" do? In a fast growing field in the world today HealthCare Mangers are known to provide leadership and coordination to the many different areas of the healthcare field. This organization makes sure that the tasks and goals set by the company can be achieved in the most efficient way possible. Healthcare managers are designed to help achieve goals as if it were all on just one person it would be an impossible task.(Buchbinder& Shanks, 2012) In reading from the Bible about leadership specifically the quote from Proverbs 16:9 stood out to me which states: "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps". (Holy Bible, NIV)

Mangers use these following six management functions to produce the best results for the company:

Planning- The manager in this function must set the direction overall. An example of this could be targets or goals to be achieved for the overall company departments or individuals.

Organizing- This step in the process is all about the design and flow of the organizational reporting. This would be setting a chain of command to decide who answers to who on what team and so forth with the company ladder.

Staffing-This is all about the step of having the workforce necessary and in place to achieve all of the goals set in place earlier. You want to have the best possible staff in all areas and have new staffing developed to the same standards as veteran employees.

Controlling- This task is all about setting target goals and achievements for individuals to make sure they are staying on task with their work assignments. A simple tracker of statistics can be helpful several times a year for certain subjects to show the employee where they are and what exactly is expected of them.

Directing- This is the crucial process of the management department. The decisions and changes that are made must have a reason and the command must be there to show employees who the boss is when some choose to disagree with the implementation of changes.

Decision Making- This is one of the toughest pieces of the six management steps in the puzzle. It is all about making a studied decision to do what is best for the company in the short and long term. All of the options must be weighed and the right decision is sometimes hard for a manager to make.

I was able to find an interesting article about healthcare management and the importance of strategic leadership. It is noted in this article that healthcare management is not an easy job and it is only getting more complicated as time progress and new problems arise. The main problem in this article was that so many employees have different qualifications in different areas, but are still working closely together in their similarity with one another. The new advances and employees with different training and qualifications can make for difficulties in the workplace. The key to solving this problem is team work and a strong leadership focus from that of a healthcare manger that is a strategic planner. This is the only possible way that the healthcare sector can continue to improve and keep the track record of proven success along the way. (Budak&Kar, 2014)A
