Samah Ibrahim has promised her parents that she will visit them over the summer. The reduced fare tickets must be purchased within the next two days and are nonrefundable. Travel dates may be changed at an additional cost if the airline has space available. Samah would like to take advantage of the low airfare, but since summer is still four months away, she is concerned that she may not be able to get away from her job on the travel dates she selects. If she has to change her travel dates, Samah estimates there is a chance that the airline will have space available. If space is not available, Samah will have to buy an additional full fare ticket. Another option is for Samah to wait two months to buy the ticket. By that time she will know exactly when she can take summer vacation. However, Samah estimates that there is a little chance that the airline will offer a reduced fare at that time.

Problem 2

While she was visiting a three day art exhibition in Beirut, an art dealer found the famous painting The Laughing Sunplant. The dealer is confident that she can sell this painting in her gallery in Doha at a price not less than 500,000 QR. The dealer can buy the painting the first day for 400,000 QR or can wait a day and buy the painting tomorrow (if it has not been sold) for 300,000 QR. The dealer may also wait another day and buy the painting (if it is still available) for 260,000 QR. At the end of the third day, the painting will no longer be available for sale.
