An elevator speech is an excellent way to convey your skills while networking and seeking employment. Typically, an elevator speech is a one-minute summary of who you are, why you are qualified, and what you have to offer the organization or industry. A brief sales pitch will ensure that you are prepared to discuss your career goals whenever the opportunity presents itself. Some examples of where you could use your elevator speech are at a networking event, during a job interview, or in a social setting.

Watch The Elevator Pitch Career Spots video (3:25 minutes) as an example.

The role of HR is to help make business successful through great people and people management. In an elevator speech, elaborate on the key skills required to be an effective human resource professional, as well as some of the challenges in acquiring those skills. Utilize one of the following options to record your elevator speech and share it with your classmates.

Voki

iTalk

PowerPoint

YouTube

Once you have completed your recording, share your pitch with the class by copying and pasting the link, or attaching the PowerPoint document for your presentation into the body of your initial post. If you are having trouble recording your elevator speech, please contact your instructor.

Review at least two of your peers' elevator speeches and comment on how well they presented the following information:

Who they are

Why they are qualified

What skills they have to offer the organization or industry

What challenges they face in acquiring those skills.

Mergers, globalization, and the desire to bring the right people together to work on the right projects are just some reasons employees are increasingly likely to be required to work beyond their own departmental or organizational boundaries. Discuss the challenges of working across boundaries and how human resources can prepare employees to thrive in a boundary-less organization. Your original response to this discussion question should be 150-200 words. Please respond to at least two (2) fellow student postings, advancing and debating the key points of their posting.
