? Sampling frame: Students who entered UCI in 2010.
? Sample: 300 first generation college students at UCI
? Sampling method: Students were recruited to the study during freshman orientation, and tracked annually for 6 years. Surveys took place over the telephone. This data is from the 2016 survey.
Research questions:
1) Are first generation students more greatly impacted by macro-level factors (like educational opportunities available, financial circumstances, prior education experience), or by micro-level factors (like ambition and family support)?
2) Are first generation college students who are studious more likely to attain their bachelor degree than first generation college students who are not?
3) Are first generation college students who participate in a college support program more likely to attain their bachelor degree than first generation college students who do not?
Variables and questions:
? ATTAIN: Having attained a bachelor degree or not
? Variable categories: BA = has BA degree; NOBA - does not have BA degree
? Survey question: "Have you completed your bachelor degree?" Answer options: 1) Yes; 2) No.
? COLLPROG: Having participated in a college support program or not
? Variable categories: PROGYES = has participated in a college support program/PROGNO= Has not participated in a college support program
? Survey question: "Have you participated in a college support program?" Answer options: 1) Yes; 2) No.
? STUDIED: How many hours spent studying per week.
? Variable categories: 0-3 = reports studying 0-3 hours per week on average; 4-6= reports studying 4-6 hours per week on average; 7+ = reports studying 7 hours per day on average
? Survey question: "On average, how many hours per week did you spend studying?" Answer options: 1) 0-3 hours; 2) 4-6 hours; 3) 7+ hours
