This is a discussion for Maupassant's "The Necklace" and Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death." You should post and respond to a classmate's post by Saturday, Sept. 16. You only have to post on one story and must respond to a classmate's post on either story. You must post before you will be able to view the thread and respond to a classmate's post.

Suggestions for Maupassant: How does Mathilde relate economic status to happiness? What is Maupassant saying about materialism in this story and how is he calling for social reform? How does Mathilde create the situation that causes the financial penance for her and her husband? How is the conclusion ironic? Does Mathilde deserve her misfortune?

Suggestions for Poe: Examine the symbolism of the room colors and the ebony clock. How does Prospero see his life within the castle before the last scene? How were all the guests dressed and why were they gathered? Analyze the Biblical reference at the end of the story? Characterize Prospero. What is he attempting to do inside his castle? Does he succeed? What is Poe's comment on wealth through this story?

For all discussions: Since the focus of the research paper will be on a theme in one of the short stories, one main topic for discussion should be the theme(s). Other suggestions are examining irony, cynical views of humanity by the authors, symbolism, historical context reflected in the story, social norms, and/or social messages.
