This morning I came across an article on livesciene website on why dogs eat feces. It was first thought that the feces where consumed in nutritional deficient dogs. Recently scientists discovered that not only nutritional deficient dogs consumed their own feces. Scientists now believe that this behavior was passed on from their wolf ancestors. Wolves consume their own feces as a second chance to for them to extract nutrients. This behavior is not only found in dogs and wolves, but also other non-human primates like rodents, rabbits, and elephants. A recent survey conducted by livesciene.com found that of dogs that consumed feces that 82 percent consumed feces that was less than 2 days old. The survey also demonstrated that in dogs that ate feces, 38 percent ate it weekly, and 62 percent sampled it daily. Scientist believe that wolves only consumed fresh feces less than 2 days old to reduce the chances of intestinal parasites. Research also showed that trying to break your dog from this behavior is hard, and that less than 4 percent of dog owners were able to stop this behavior.
