Discussion Response

Read the arguments presented by your classmates, and analyze the reasoning that they have presented. Whether you agree with their position or not, see if you can help them to improve their arguments. In particular, point out any respect in which a reasonable person might disagree with the truth of their premises or with the strength of their reasoning. Consider addressing the following questions: Did your classmate present a convincing argument? Why, or why not? Which part of the argument might someone dispute (e.g., premise, conclusion, structure, etc.)? How might the argument be strengthened?

Argument: Is it important to teach the arts and humanities to children?

Argument#1

Premise 1: Arts and humanities enhance personal creativity and allow for expression. It can help bring children out of the box and learn new things.

Premise 2: Arts can be used to help students learn mathematics by using rhythm's, patterns and geometrical shapes.
Therefore, it is important to teach children the arts and humanities.

Argument strength:

The argument brings in the truth logic about how it is a fact that the arts can help in the two premises and that educators have been fighting to keep the arts and humanities in the schools for many years but underfunding has them cutting these areas and a disservice to next generations that will not have the opportunity to express themselves. I also feel that when looking for employees, the employer is looking for someone that is well rounded to be able to handle the different things that might come their way.

Argument weakness:

It might have needed more proof in my premise. For example, a citation from a scholarly source, expressing the fact that it is documented that the arts can enhance learning.

Argument#2

Premise 1: Arts and humanities take time away from core subjects. With so little time and so many students in a classroom, these classes need to be eliminated.

Premise 2: With so little funding for the arts and humanities, schools could no longer afford to include these classes in their curriculum.
Therefore, it is not important to teach children the arts and humanities.

Argument strength:

The argument brings in the truth logic about how classrooms are too full and time is limited in each classroom because they can only be in school for a certain amount of time. Also, education as a limited amount of resources and cutting funding to our schools and the education our children receive has been an ongoing issue.

Argument weakness:

The argument is assuming that classes are full and funding is limited.

I feel both arguments show real perspectives on what is happening in education today.

Argument- Does social media enhance or hinder interpersonal relationships?

Premise 1: Social media makes a huge difference in people life, it's very important and needed to stay in touch with family and friends.

Premise 2: Social media is the main reason why people have trouble socially interact in person, or even arguing face to face. They think it is easier than communicating to each other.

Conclusion: Social media plays a huge effect on America communication skills.

Premise 2 distract people from who they really are, and not pay attention to the valuable things in life. Instead of spending quality and valuable time with the family their family, they are all in their phones not pay attention to anything that is going on. But when it comes to talking to people, they don't know how to and aren't comfortable with it.

Premise 1: Is the way how the majority of our society stays involved in each other life, especially having family that lives long distance. They keep up with what they do every day, and how their process is going. It's very valuable for family and friends who live long distance or overseas.
