Discussion Forum: Applying Critical Strategies

First, read about Critical Strategies on pages 1441-1462. Think of a critical strategy as a different "lens" to use that enables you to see aspects of a story that may not have been visible (or in focus) before.

Then, after reading Andre Dubus's "Killings", William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily", and Ernest Hemingway's "Soldier's Home," consider the information covered in Critical Strategies for Reading (beginning on page 1441), Reading and the Writing Process (page 1465), and Questions for Arguing about Literature (page 1473). Which critical strategy do you find most useful for either (or both) of these stories, and why? What does the strategy you chose help you to "see" about a story that might not have been as visible before?
