Discussion: Early Experiences in Philanthropy

Fundraising and nonprofit organizations have a long history in the United States as well as in other nations around the world.

Many people are aware of nonprofit or nongovernmental organizations in their communities and regions that regularly solicit individuals, foundations, government entities, and other sources (religious communities, civic groups, etc.) for funds to operate, build, and maintain programs and services.

You may have learned about philanthropy as a child through family examples, religious upbringing, a specific event, or a specific local need that motivated you and others to give.

In this Discussion, reflect on when you first asked anyone for money that would benefit someone other than yourself. What motivated you?
