TOPIC: Read Ch. 14 (Slavery in the Antebellum Society) in your textbook, The Way We Lived. To what extent did the existence of slavery shape the entire social structure and culture of the South? Why did slavery so deeply affect even the vast majority of white southerners who held no slaves?
CLASSMATE Julia RESPONSE: When the expansion of cotton grew, southerners became extremely dependent on slave labor. When cotton expanded south and west towards the Mississippi delta and Texas, the promise of great profits led to an even larger demand for slave labor. The criss-cross patterned of the slave trade helped create the political economy of slavery into a whole. When the tobacco destroyed the the fields of Chesapeake, the slave trade allowed Virginia and Maryland to regain their ties in the slavery economy. The slave economy deepened daily with support because nonslaveholders were turned into slaveholders. Southern politicians also wanted to make sure nonslaveholders would support the regime of slavery in the future. Slaveholding politicians were considering reopening the African slave trade to lower prices of the slaves and increase the amount of slaveholders within the population.

Why is management hierarchy an important aspect to the leadership structure of an agency? Explain the need for decision making, individual roles, and why accepting the duties of one's role is important to accomplishing objectives and goals of an agency.
