RE: Discussion 1

The American response to domestic terrorism does not differ drastically from an international response in that since the proliferation of terroristic events, specifically since the attacks of September 11, 2001, there has been a general standardization of terror response. Two critical learning points from past terroristic acts are intelligence gathering and information sharing.

Int he U.S., the primary lesson learned post 9/11 was a significant lack of information sharing between the vast network of federal law enforcement agencies.

Because terrorism is not defined by any specific act of violence, the challenge of identifying and thwarting terroristic acts, both domestically and internationally, is keeping up with the ever-changing techniques terror cells use against people.

I believe the greatest change forthcoming in the next five years in the war on terror will be an international task-force involving all NATO countries. The problem of terrorism is an international problem, and can only be stopped via international information sharing and jurisdiction. This method will open international channels of communications and allow vast quantities of information sharing, which is critical in the defense of the terrorist threat.

Regarding this foolish author's ideas on ending terrorism, please Lord help me to bite my tongue. My initial thought was that this idea was so outrageously foolish and absurd that I did not even feel it was worthy of my response. However, as the assignment requires my opinion on the matter, I will reluctantly provide just that.

His first idea, to apologize to all the those orphaned, widowed, tortured, and impoverished seeks to blame the US military for the consequences of the actions of terroristic organizations. His second idea, that the US will no longer involve themselves in "global intervention" would lead to the proliferation of Isis and other terror cells throughout the world, immediately followed by fear, death, and destruction at the hands of religious extremists.

Regarding the author's ill-advised idea of decimating our military to pay reparations to the victims, I wonder who he will hide behind when Mexico or Canada decides they want to take over our newly weakened country. I think it is safe to bet that he will not be capable of defending himself.

The degree to which the author's plan would work is absolutely zero in my opinion. These are the ranting extremists views of a person clearly incapable of seeing the bigger picture and realizing that actions have consequences. No thank you. I would much prefer a plan that does not involve destroying the United States' ability to defend itself.

I don't think no amount of money will make a victim feel whole again. They have gone through something that has changed their whole life. Yea they will get passed it but they will never forget. The money that they will get will only send the message saying " i know you are a victim but here is some money so you can feel better ". The money that they will get will only be to help them pay for counseling but not giving them back the life they once knew.

Here is an example of something happen in my life (not me personally but a family member). This family member was with this guy and he would abuse her and destroy her home, she went through this for years but had the courage to stand up and say enough is enough and she called the police and had him arrested they go to court and he was sentenced to do 5 years in prison and he had to pay her restitution. Well to this day she is not whole she is always looking over her shoulder and always feeling like someone is out to get her.

Once she starts to get the money he was ordered to give her it didn't make her feel whole it just helps to pay for counseling and to try and put her life back together. She is getting better now that she can talk about it more with people.

From the article that read there are a few thing that the state prisons here in North Carolina can do. 1 they can get body scanner to scan everyone that comes in and out of the prison. 2 they can check the background of the people that they hire. The examples that i found was there was an officer in Charlotte that was smuggling drug to an inmate so they can sell in prison well that officer was later fired.

Next, there was an officer in Durham that was giving drugs and cell phones to a gang member, that officer was known to have had a criminal background and was employed by the state. as a result of his wrongdoing he was fire and charged with the crime he was doing. These are things that really happen in my state and they will need to do better about this. I guess it must be true what people say about prison and that is "you can get more drug and sex in prison then you get on the street"
