Discussion 1 : Write an Editorial Response

An editorial is an unsigned statement representing the editorial broad of the organization. These are typically short and persuasive and attempt to convince the readers of their point of view.

Scenario: You work for a local environmental cleanup company, ABC Environment. Recently your company has come under attack in the local paper with citizens writing opinion editorials about the company's lackluster performance at recent cleanup sites.

Your organization has also been criticized for eliminating 10% of the workforce over the last year and just doing the minimum required work at cleanups. This has produced an unfavorable public opinion of the organization. Your manager has asked you to write an editorial response that represents the company to these opinions.

He would like the response to be professional and informative to the general public but not attacking those that wrote their opinions. He would like you to include the reason for the workforce reductions (down economy) and facts that show the cleanup effort were completed to the environmental standards.

Discussion 2 : Photographs and Graphics

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Describe the use of photographs and graphics in the field of journalism. When should photographs be used and when should they not be used in reporting? How does privacy play into sharing photographs in the news? What circumstances do you think images should not be used in a story?
