Discussion -Unique Diversity Issues

Over time the field of psychology has used various terms to capture issues related to differences among individuals. Though terms such as cross-cultural, multicultural, and diversity do not apply to every relevant issue or group, they all are concepts that refer to differences among humans.

The field of psychology and other related fields continue to evolve in their appreciation of the impact that diversity issues have on services provided. This may be because research on diversity issues provides ever increasing knowledge and understanding in this area which all service providers, including forensic psychology professionals, should consider when working with people. Research relevant to psychology and the law emphasizes the need to consider diversity issues in professional training and in the practice of forensic psychology.

As the understanding of how diversity impacts human behavior increases, the need to identify diversity issues and apply relevant ethical guidelines is ever more important. Part of your role as a forensic psychology professional is to be competent in working with diverse populations.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review the article "Developing Multicultural Ethics Guidelines for Psychology" considering the impact of diversity on the application of ethical guidelines.

• Review this week's case study provided in the introduction area of this weeks discussion. Think about various diversity issues you might encounter in forensic settings.

• Pay particular attention to various individual differences in forensic populations.

• Identify at least two diversity issues in the case study.

• Review the APA's ethical codes and AP-LS' specialty guidelines. Think about which guidelines pertain to and might help to address the issues you identified.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a brief explanation of at least two diversity issues you identified in the case study. Then explain which multicultural or diversity guidelines pertain to and might help address these issues and how. Be specific.

Note: Identify the two diversity issues you selected in the first line of your post. You will be asked to respond to a colleague who selected a diversity issue that you did not.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Application: Applying Diversity/Multicultural Guidelines

In the Discussion you were asked to analyze a case study through the lens of diversity. You indentified specific diversity issues and explained which guidelines might be used to address these particular issues. Now you delve more deeply into this important aspect of forensic psychology and analyze diversity and multicultural issues from a personal perspective.

You examine diversity issues in terms of professional roles, forensic settings, and forensic populations. Forensic psychology professionals provide services in various venues related to the legal system including the courts, correctional institutions, and law enforcement agencies. In these venues you will be exposed to array of diverse individuals including professionals, victims, suspects, and incarcerated individuals who come from different cultures and backgrounds.

Diversity can encompass a broad range of differences from yourself including language difference, gender orientation, social economic background, religion, and age. As a professional, you are expected to act in an ethical way when working with diverse populations. By applying specific diversity guidelines, forensic psychology professionals, are more likely to provide ethical and quality service to all forensic populations.

To prepare for this assignment:

• Think about your own beliefs regarding multicultural differences.

• Reflect on the role of a forensic psychology professional in addressing diversity/multicultural differences and meeting the needs of a diverse set of clients. Think about how the "Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychologists'" apply to a forensic psychology professional and diversity.

• Peruse the APA website's ethical codes and review the articles "APA Guidelines for Providers of Psychological Services to Ethnic, Linguistic, and Culturally Diverse Populations" and "American Guidelines on Multicultural Education, Training, Research, Practice, and Organizational Change for Psychologists." Think about how these codes and guidelines apply to a forensic psychology professional working with diverse populations.

• Reflect on which guidelines you believe are the most important to the role of a forensic psychology professional.

• Select at least three guidelines to use for this assignment that you believe are most important to the forensic psychology professional.

• Think about how you might apply the guidelines you selected.

The assignment (2-3 pages):

• Describe your current forensic psychology professional role, the forensic setting in which you work, and the forensic population with which you work-or choose one (role, setting, and population) with which you are familiar or with which you aspire to work. (This should match the one you intend to use for your Final Project.)

• Briefly describe and cite the three diversity and/or multicultural guidelines you selected.

• Explain why and how each guideline is relevant to the role, setting, and/or population you chose (Note: Use the letter/number and title of each guideline).

• Explain how you might apply the guidelines you selected.

• Share an insight(s)/draw a conclusion(s) about applying guidelines specific to multiculturalism/diversity in forensic settings.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course.
