ABV Exercise - Personal Goals and Values Inventory

Life Goal Inventory

This inventory is designed to help you examine your life goals. Describe as fully as you can your aims and goals in all areas of your life. List all goals that are important to you, whether they are fairly easy or difficult to attain. Be honest in this assessment; only then will the inventory be useful to you. For example, if your major goal is to enjoy leisure satisfactions, indicate this, so as to better understand yourself. Describe three goals in each of the following spheres over the next year. Use as much detail and description as you can:

Career (goals in employment or career; situation aimed for)

Relationships with People (goals with family, friends, colleagues, others)

Status and Respect (goals in your social circles; people from whom you seek esteem)

Leisure (Vacation, sports, hobbies, or other interests)

Learning and Education (knowledge, skills, experiences to learn, areas to study)

Spiritual Growth and Religion (goals: peace of mind, prayer, meaning, giving self to others)

Material Rewards and Possessions (goals in income, wealth, possessions)

Rank Ordering of Personal Values

Rank the following 16 long-range personal values in order of importance to you, that is, insofar as they are guiding principles in your life.  Place 1 in front of the value that is most important in your life, 2 in front of the next most important, and so on.  The least important value for you should be ranked 16.  When you are finished, the list should roughly indicate the importance of the various values in your life.

Achievement (promotions at work)

Beauty (natural and artistic beauty)

Cooperation

Dollar rewards (money and salary)

Family security (taking care of and being with family)

Freedom (independence)

Justice (equal opportunity for all; concern for disadvantage)

Love, friendship, and intimacy

Physical health and well being

Pleasure (enjoyable personal life)

Possessions (good car, clothes, home, material goods)

Recognition (respect, admiration from others)

Self-respect (good self-image, self-esteem)

Sense of accomplishment (making lasting contribution)

Spirituality (prayer, mediation, striving to be good person)

World at peace

Q 1.

Describe the qualities you believe are necessary in an ethical leader. Using concepts from the chapter provide support for your contentions and explain why a leader should display these qualities in order to be considered ethical from your perspective. Then identify someone you believe embodies these qualities in his or her leadership and provide examples.

Q.2

This discussion board question requires you to reflect on your results for the Personal Goals and Values Inventory Assignment (WA5). Looking at the Life Goal Inventory as a whole, describe your top three life goals. Do your top three goals all come from the same sphere (career, relationships, status and respect, etc.), or do they come from a variety of spheres? Which categories were the easiest to complete? Which categories were the most difficult to complete?
