Defarge is walking toward his home when he sees a gang of armed robbers emerging from his local bank. The robbers brutally kill one of the customers, Micawber, who is standing outside the bank between the gang and their getaway car. Upon seeing this distressing scene, Defarge goes into a state of shock and attacks Slammer, one of the robbers, who is trying to give himself up to the police because he disapproves of the

killing of Micawber by his colleagues. Slammer is quite seriously wounded by this onslaught. After Defarge is taken to the police station, he claims that he does not remember anything about the attack on Slammer; all he remembers is the brutal killing by the other bank robbers.
