Context:

You have been invited to write a short story that is to be included in an anthology titled ‘Beyond the Pages: Redefining Twentieth Century Classics’.

As its title suggests, the purpose of this anthology is to encourage readers to consider ‘the gaps’ or what has been left out of a  classic work of Twentieth Century literature. Your task is to imaginatively address this gap through an engaging short story.

TASK

Compose a short story that addresses a point of view, other than the narrator’s, in the novel.

Your short story must:

• Focus on an event that has occurred outside the pages of the novel (the event might have been referred to, but not described in any detail)
• Provide the perspective of a character other than that of the protagonist. You do not necessarily have to write in first person from this character’s perspective, but you must explore their attitudes towards the event.

• Adhere to short story conventions (structure and language features) You need to set the short story in the world of the character and also show understanding of the author’s construction/representation of the character.
