The ancient Rabbis and the author of the New Testament felt envy was one of the prime sins. Of the seven deadly sins that are listed in Glittering Vices, envy and anger should be the two most prevalent in today's society. We live in a world that is envious of others and angry at those same people.

Envy is typically concerned about who we are, and targets the internal qualities of another person, qualities that give a person worth, honor, standing, and status. (Konyndyk DeYoung p. 43) In America we are always concerned about what others have in terms of status. We want to be more like those that are rich and famous. Unlike covetousness, we want to be like them, not what they have.

Because of this envy, when we are not like those that we are envious of, we end up getting angry at those people. According to Thomas Aquinas, anger is a response to injustice: it requires recognition that someone has been wronged, followed by a subsequent desire to set things right (Konyndyk DeYoung p. 118). We feel like if we should be as popular and successful as others and when we are not we will wrong.

These sins are the opposite of Jesus's teachings. We are to love one another. We are not to be envious of others and should hold our tongue and feeling and not get angry at others.
