The terms "modernity" and "postmodernity" are used to describe the general belief systems of society from the Enlightenment to the present day. Modernism defines the time when people began questioning their beliefs in religion and God. Groothuis explains in his book that "The modernist vision presupposed the power of rationality to discover objective truth."1 This idea went against foundational, Biblical standards because of the way it removed faith from the thought equation. Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians that "We walk by faith, not by sight."2 Human knowledge is not enough to comprehend all of the mysteries of the universe God created, so trying to reason answers out of doubting questions will only lead to confusion. There must be a certain amount of faith and trust in God to truly comprehend eternity.
Once modernism began to lose popularity, postmodernism rose to replace it. Postmodernists completely rejected the idea of God and left the belief system up to the individual. Groothuis goes on to explain that "Their worldview, however, ends up being more of a preference or prejudice than a philosophically argued position in the classical sense..."3 Everyone is allowed (and even encouraged) to believe whatever they want to believe if it makes said individual satisfied with life. However, the Bible states in John that "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."4 Even though these philosophies give comfort for those who follow them, they will never be the truth people need.
