Conduct a short interview-by phone, in person or by email-of a court clerk, assistant clerk, docketing clerk, administrative assistant, bailiff, or other staff member of a court near where you live or work. Identify the individual and his or her job title.

You may omit name if he or she requests anonymity; just include the court that the individual works in and job title. Describe what role this person plays in the operation of the court and some of the tasks he or she engages in to fulfil the role.

Explain how this person's position can help make courts run more or less efficiently. Specifically, discuss his or her role in relation to court calendars, dockets, and case management.

NOTE: Remember to use the Interview Consent form to obtain formal consent from the interviewee prior to the interview. The form is located in the Assignment Guidelines and Rubrics section of the course. For additional details, please refer to the Module Four Short Paper Guidelines and Rubric document in the Assignment Guidelines and Rubrics section of the course.

Module Four Short Paper

The Module Four short paper explores the role of court personnel with an on-the-ground learning experience. For this assignment, you will interview a member of your local court staff. This short paper provides an opportunity to create linkages between the information you have obtained from class resource materials and the reality of your local court system, and to articulate your understanding of those linkages.

Conduct a short interview-by phone, in person, or by email-of a court clerk, assistant clerk, docketing clerk, administrative assistant, bailiff, or other staff member of a court near where you live or work. You should have previously selected the local court employee who you are going to interview and chosen a time to interview them.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

Identification: Identify the individual you interviewed and his or her job title (you may omit name if the individual requests anonymity; just include the court that he or she works in and job title).

Role: Describe what role your interviewee plays in the operation of the court and some of the tasks that the individual engages in to fulfil his or her job requirements.

Efficiency: Describe the role of the court staff person in creating judicial efficiency. Explain how this person's position can help make courts run more or less efficiently. Specifically, discuss his or her role in relation to court calendars, dockets, and case management.

Guidelines for Submission: Your short paper must be submitted as a one- to two-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and at least three sources cited in APA format.
