Compensation and Performance Management Undergraduate Term Assignment:

An Analysis and Justified Recommendation of an Experienced Performance Appraisal

Assignment Purpose: Student Analyzes an Experienced Performance Appraisal and Justifies Change

In this assignment, the undergraduate student reviews one or more experiences in performance appraisal and, based on content provided in the text, the professor’s notes, at least three scholarly articles, and at least three practitioner articles, address the following questions or requirements in each section.

Follow the A.P.A. style and include a cover page and use the following main section headings, addressing the questions and issues within each section. See the A.P.A. Style guide in the OWL site within the Web Links area. Use Times New Roman Font, size 11 or 12, and follow the double space or the 1.5-line space protocol (See the A.P.A. sample paper). In each section of the paper, use coherent arguments based on theory, practice, evidence, and data from scholarly and practitioner sources.

Cover Page (A.P.A.)

I Introduction

Provide a brief overview of the job that you held (or hold) in terms of responsibilities, duties and tasks, reporting relationships, and job specifications (such as education, skills, abilities, experience . . .). Keep this within 1 page.

II Company’s Overall Pay Model

Describe, to the best of your ability, the company’s pay model (as defined in chapters 1 & 2). After a substantial description, address the following question and following recommendation,

“Was the performance appraisal method part larger performance management system? Explain.”   

“Based on your knowledge, what would you recommend that managers do to improve the linkages of performance appraisals to performance management?”

You should read the posted notes on Performance Appraisal Concepts, and chapter 11 of the text, before you start this section of the paper. This section of the paper should be 2 - 3 pages.

III The Relationship of the Performance Appraisal to the Stated Job Description

In this section of the paper, describe and explain the degree to which the performance appraisal method used related to the stated job description (in terms of responsibilities, reporting relationships, tasks, duties, and expectations (explain). This section should be 2 - 3 pages.

IV The Performance Appraisal Design and Methods Used

In this section of the paper, describe, review, and assess how the performance appraisal instrument was designed and implemented. Since company’ vary widely on how performance appraisals are done, you want to address such issues as whether or not, or the degree to which, the appraisal used trait measurements, behavioral measurements, and/or outcome measurements. You should also tell the reader the type of instruments used, such as Ranking, Rating Scales, Graphic Scales, BARS, BOS, Critical Incidents, Essay, Objective Setting, 360-Degree, . . . and the degree to which performance was rated individually and mutually (as in team appraisal). Be very specific and objective in this section. Include the reasons that management justified the scales and how they explained its purpose and objective. The notes on performance appraisal concepts provides useful links for you to explore.

Then, from your “informed” opinion (viz. have references to scholarly literature), assess the performance appraisal method in terms of representativeness, reliability, and validity. Provide one specific and reasoned recommendation for each performance appraisal method problem or gap that you identified. This section should be 2 - 5 pages

V Lessons Learned

In this section discuss any lesson that you learned in critiquing the performance appraisal experiences that you provided in this exercise. Remember that you, as a manager, administrator, or even co-worker may someday have to administer a performance appraisal. This section should be within 1 page.
