Be sure to read Chapters 3 & 4 of the textbook before doing this assignment!

· Select one piece of art from each of the following civilizations:

1. Classical Greece 
2. Hellenistic Greece 
3. Etruscan civilization 
4. Roman Republic
5. Roman Empire

· Write a 700 - to 1,050 - word essay analyzing the pieces of art selected. Answer the following questions:

1. What kind of artwork is it? (In other words, what category does it belong to? Identify the work as visual art, architecture, literature, or music.)

2. What does the artwork express or reveal?3. What is the relationship between the art and the culture of the related civilization?

A. How did that genre of art influence the culture of that civilization?

B. How did the culture influence that genre of art?

You must discuss 5 (five) different pieces of art for this paper. The best way to organize your essay is to set up a header for each civilization, and then respond to the three questions separately for each piece of art you choose. This will help ensure that you do not overlook the separate elements of the assignment. Each section will need to be brief (approx. 200 words each) in order to fall within the word count limits. Hint: Be sure to be very clear about the difference between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire in both your own thinking and in your writing of the essay. Be sure to provide a citation for each piece that includes a URL that will link directly to an image of the art on the Internet. Alternately, you can place a photo of the piece directly into the paper, but the citation must still accompany it. Then a reference for that citation must appear on the References page.
