It does not help us in fleshing out ideas but fleshing out the structure of our dissertation. This is important because one can lose focus as they begin writing and this template helps keep the overall structure tight. This template gives us detailed information on how we must structure and bring our dissertation to its final form.

The prospectus template is focused upon the details of the information of our dissertation. It gives us the ability to put forth the problem we are seeking to address and how we are going to answer that problem. It is also for the dissertation committee to explore to see if we are ready to proceed with our dissertation and that we have a sound problem and argument to resolve that problem. Thus, it gives them an overview of our topic, our procedures and our resources. It is necessary to keep us on track and show that we know what we are seeking to explore and the direction we are going to explore. It is important for it gives us a beginning evaluation of our dissertation and can supply us with needed feedback as to what needs to be tweaked or completely changed.
