Technical Skills and Industry Knowledge: This is the basic quality of the good manager to manage the business. Good manager will have sound knowledge about the industry, the product, and its market and customer expectation. Narayanmurthy the CEO of Infosys is a best example for this. Democratic: A good manager is democratic in nature. He always ensures employee participation in decision making and do not impose the decisions on the subordinates. Concern for people as well as concern for task: A good manager has ability to strike balance between the concern for people and for task. He is good at ensuring maximum productivity and maximum employee satisfaction at any given point of time. Communication Skills: Able manager will have listening skills, persuasive skills and ability to communicate clearly and influentially. He should be very good at giving effective feedback to his subordinates and establish goal and role clarity.
Team Player: A good manager is capable of establishing and maintaining an effective team which has greater coordination, clear communication, fewer conflicts, and harmonious interpersonal relationships, democratic, internally open and have mutual trust. Good manager always strives to keep the morale of the work group at high. Takes initiative: good manager takes initiative to solve the organizational problems and innovative in nature and promotes creativity within organization. Steve Jobs, I consider as the manager with great ability to take initiative and promote organizational innovativeness. Vision: Good manager have ability to envision the goal for the team and for the organization as a whole. He should be able to transcend the organizational goals into the vision and motivation of the employees so as to establish goal clarity and motivate the employees to work towards the goal.
Empathy: Skillful manager is able to project himself into personalities of others and is good at understanding the need and motives of his subordinates and colleagues. Manager with good empathetic ability can forge better inter-personal relationship with his subordinates. Ratan Tata of TCS Group is the best example for the empathetic personality who is well known in south Asia for the social and organizational empathy., Time Management: Good manager is skillful at prioritizing his time and task and make effective use of the time along with balancing his personal and professional life. Integrity: Good manager is a trustworthy, reliable and personal of strong character. Lack of integrity leads to distrust and creates reluctance for the superior among the subordinates.
