CHANCE TO PURSUE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

With humility, I request for a chance to pursue occupational therapy. It has been my interest since childhood to participate in life changing programs. I would love to have a chance to turn my passion into a profession. I render my application for the OTCAS 2015/16 intake. It is a field I feel I can contribute tremendously.

I have a rich educational background that that makes me best suited to take a course in occupational therapy. I attained 80 credits from a community college. I am a qualified nurse who has served many roles in a hospital. I have interacted with patients at casualty, labor wards, theater and the psychiatric ward. It is free here that I developed a liking for providing a solution to a different group of affected people; those patients who need help from an occupational therapist.

Since childhood have always had a soft spot for the needy people. I remember this neighbor who was an old lady for her child had gone for further studies. She stayed alone, and I would pass by on a weekend to cheer up and help her with regular house chores like cleaning. At the elementary school, I joined the Red Cross club for it participated in a lot of charities. I also took up nursing to get a platform to help people. The quest has not ended, and it is what has led me to have a liking for occupational therapy. I want to expand my ability not only to be able to administer medicinal solution but also mental and physical solutions.

There is a category of people out there in the society who suffer from the cognitive disorder, mental and physical challenges. It is the group I want to have a touch of change in their life by working with them to achieve a desirable outcome. Most of these people have been neglected by the society for they feel ashamed to be associated with them. Their families feel ashamed for they will be ridiculed by their friends by associating with this group. People also demean those in the profession of occupational therapy for they are seen as doing a dirty job. I want to help those with the problems and help their families to be able to accept those who are suffering from the condition. It will be my happiness to give hope to those affected and their families. It will be a turning point to a happy family relationship.

Occupational therapy will open up my mind on how I can help those affected overcome their challenges. I will be able to study how the environment of exposure is a challenge to their recovery. The environment does not necessarily be the physical by it can be the social life they are exposed. By learning, I get to know parameters through which environment is likely to put them at a disadvantage. I shall also be taught on how the situation can be made better by adapting it to suit the recovery of them. I will also be able to know how I can use the family of the affected participate in their recovery. Apart from providing love by the family I will know of other roles they can come to their assistance.

It will also know how to work best with other professional when offering assistance to an affected person. I shall be able to work with speech therapist, physical therapists, the community, social workers and nurses. A speech therapist helps those challenged in their speech while physical therapists handle with joints challenges. Social work and nurses are involved in providing daily care and medical attention respectively. By working hand in hand, I will be able to have an insight into the challenges an affected person is having and be in a better position to provide working solutions.

My interest is to have an impact on the life of the affected in different areas. It will involve learning how to change their daily lives by helping them with tips on how to maintain personal hygiene, eating and grooming themselves. I will also want to how I can assist them in instrumental activities like how they can stay safe, conduct their worship and cook for themselves. Some have sleeping disorders and will be able to learn how I can help them prepare for sleep and their rest too. Their social life in general how they can work, study and play safety without them feeling marginalized. It will all revolve on how I can give them a hopeful life.

Some of those in this category require particular attention in rehabilitation. It is my quest to know how it can bee done at different places like the hospital, at home, at nursing homes, and in day rehabilitation centers. I will be equipped with knowledge of how to involve an adult with autism undergoing rehabilitation at a day program for community service. I get information on how to manage stress and anxiety in a cancer survivor. I will have the ability to train those with amputated hands on how they can fix and remove a myoelectrical limb. I will be equipped with skills on how to deal with those having post-traumatic stress disorder. Such could be rape victims, war victims or soldier from war zones.

Making an impact on the lives of the young generation will be a great service to do. These involve toddlers, children and infants at different environments including homes, clinics, and schools. It will be an opportunity to shape their destiny by helping to build and perfect the skills that they are best perform. Obesity will be eliminated for I will have known the best wellness program to administer to them. Teaching functional skills to children having development challenges on a daily activity will be a humbling opportunity. I will be part of that great model who the children will be proud of in the future ad be happy about it.

Your institution will play a big role by giving me an opportunity to pursue occupational therapy. Through a learning opportunity that will

transform to a professional will you have helped a thousand of affected to get a chance of assistance. I long to be part of a history of those great players in transforming and touching lives of the affected.
Yours sincerely
