You are to take the case that is given to you and develop a brief report that will help those who parent and teach the learner understand and improve the learner's situation.

Your written report should be typed up to include the following sections: Description of the Case (who is the learner?), Observations (bullet points/what is the issue with the learner?), Assessment (how could you measure the issue to determine what was going on?

You must include a copy or example of the measurement), and Recommendations (for the future of the learner), and Literature Review (provide some insight from current research on the issue.

Include APA style citations and references). Include a title page on the front of the report and head each section in the report with appropriate section titles. You will also give a brief oral report of this on the due date for this assignment.

Nine-year-old Jason attends fourth grade at a small private school that routinely individualizes assignments to accommodate students' strengths and weaknesses; hence, teachers rarely refer students to be evaluated for possible disabilities.

Throughout his school career, Jason has shown many signs of giftedness (e.g., an ability to learn quickly, early emergence of abstract thinking, strong social and leadership skills).

However, Jason consistently exhibits difficulties with written language. As an example, his performance on a weekly spelling test appears on the next page.

Questions to Consider as You Examine the Spelling Test

• What words is Jason trying to spell?

• What aspects of written language has Jason mastered? What aspects has he not mastered?

• Judging from what you have previously observed about fourth graders, is Jason's performance typical for his grade level? If not, what aspects of his performance are unusual for students at his grade level?

• Do you think Jason has a disability? If so, what might it be?

• If Jason has a disability, what would be the advantages of having it identified as such? What might be potential disadvantages?
