CASE STUDY 1

MANAGERIAL STATISTICS

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) recently conducted a study of motorists in Idaho. The data they collected can be found in the file calledLiabins. The worksheet named DATA DESCRIPTIONS includes definitions of variables for the sample of 100 motorists. The data itself is on worksheet DATA.

In analyzing this data, you need to provide the following analyses and prepare a written report discussing ALL your findings, incorporating your statistical analysis done in Excel into your written report in Word. Print out of your report to turn in in class.Your report should be written as if you have been hired as a consultant to the Idaho DOT and not mere answers to parts a though h.

Describe the data on vehicle year, driver age, years lived in state and years of education for this sample of motorists using a combination of frequency distributions and descriptive statistics. Discuss in terms of central tendency and dispersion.

One state trooper was heard saying that those with citations were typically young drivers under 30 years old. For those observations with at least one citation, test the hypothesis made by the trooper about the average age of the driver. Can you reject the null hypothesis at any acceptable level of significance.

Test the hypothesis that the average number of citations is the same for female drivers and male drivers. Can you reject the null hypothesis at any acceptable level of significance.

Construct and interpret the 95% confidence interval for the average number of years a driver has lived in the state using the whole sample and do the same for those drivers that were unaware or uncertain about the law requiring liability insurance. Do these 2 confidence intervals tell you anything useful? If so, what?

Construct and interpret the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of drivers that had their insurance cards in the vehicle with them.

Test the hypothesis that the proportion of people insured is greater than 95%. Can you reject the null hypothesis at any acceptable level of significance.

Explore the relationship between the number of citations and the driver's age. Use whatever method(s) you think is(are) appropriate.

Explore the relationship between the number of citations and the driver's education level.Use whatever method(s) you think is(are) appropriate.
