Scenario Problem Solving/Goal Setting Option 1:

Jordan is trying to get into the nursing program at Baker College and has to maintain a high GPA to be accepted. Jordan, who is typically an "A" student, is having difficulties memorizing the required terms and anatomy, not due to inabilities, but due to the many distractions inherent in balancing work, family, and school.

The family is complaining that Jordan is never home, and even when Jordan is home, Jordan is preoccupied with school or work. Jordan is a notorious procrastinator, and in an effort to keep peace with spouse and children, is working late into the night after the kids are in bed in an effort to maintain good grades. Unfortunately, this causes Jordan to often be late to work or school and to not be attentive during the day.

Respond to the following items:
- Identify at least three self-defeating behaviors that Jordan displays and discuss at least three methods of alleviating Jordan's self-defeating behavior.

- List and describe how Jordan could use the standard problem-solving and decision-making steps to help the situation.

- Using the action plans to support goals and the guidelines for goal setting, identify and prioritize at least three of Jordan's current goals.

- Discuss potential conflicts among the three goals and how that conflict could be lessened or resolved.

Scenario Problem Solving/Goal Setting Option 2:
Joan has been asked by her boss to create a PowerPoint presentation on workplace motivation. Joan is expected to deliver the presentation to her peers in two weeks. She begins to work on the presentation, however she becomes immediately overwhelmed with the task and decides to wait until closer to the deadline.

Two days before the deadline Joan starts working on the PowerPoint again. She meticulously researches workplace motivation and creates various scenarios to exemplify it in her presentation. She spends hours and hours working including overnight in an effort to ensure her work is perfect.

The deadline comes and goes yet she is still not done. Joan can't decide what to edit out of her presentation because she feels like it is too long. She is also having a hard time submitting it to her boss because it is not quite perfect yet and she does not want her boss to see subpar work. Her boss is becoming increasingly frustrated with Joan's lack of productivity because she is so focused on the presentation rather than her daily work responsibilities.

Respond to the following items:
- Identify at least three self-defeating behaviors that Joan displays and discuss at least three methods of alleviating Joan's self-defeating behavior.

- List and describe how Joan could use the standard problem-solving and decision-making steps to help the situation.

- Using the action plans to support goals and the guidelines for goal setting, identify and prioritize at least three of Joan's current goals.

- Discuss potential conflicts among the three goals and how that conflict could be lessened or resolved.
