It was late at night when I sleepily climbed over the pile of shoes at the bottom of my staircase. I climbed the stairs and headed to my bedroom with my dog, a pit-bull terrier, named Casey. After brushing my teeth and getting ready to sleep, I sat on my bed and beckoned Casey to sit on my lap. I ran my hand through her soft, brown fur and patted her head, noticing how quiet she was. Shrugging it off, I placed her back on her spot on the ground beside my bed. I quickly switched off the lights and tucked myself in. It was not long before sleep overcame me.

Thump. Thump. Thump. This sound repeated itself in my head for a few minutes before I fully noticed it. Suddenly my eyes flew open in panic. There was an intruder. Someone had broken into my apartment. But soon the footsteps were gone. I quickly threw the covers off myself and looked on the side of the bed, looking for Casey. She was nowhere in sight. I thought perhaps she had already gone done to see what all the commotion was. Strange, I didn't hear any barking either. I climbed out of bed and slowly made my way down, being sure to slam doors and make a lot of sounds to scare the intruders, if any. When I reached the kitchen, I checked all the doors. They were securely locked. So there were no intruders. Looking around, I noticed the closet door was slightly opened. When I opened it, I found Casey, sitting in the corner with her head facing the wall. Now, I never believed in paranormal activities, but was there a chance Casey saw a ghost and chased it only to have it fly into the wall? Once again, I shrugged it off and went to bed with Casey following close behind. I tucked myself in once more, but did not fall asleep that easily. The thought of my apartment being haunted really put me on end. After a little while, I gave up my fruitless attempt to stay awake and dozed off.

Thump. Thump. Thump. This time, my eyes flew open, and I immediately looked over the side of the bed. Casey was gone again. A ghost. My mind flew through the logistics of there being an actual ghost in my apartment. Thump. Thump. Thump. There it was again, but just as soon as it came, it was gone. I once more got out of bed and climbed down the stairs, but this time I tiptoed. I was as quiet as a ghost, ironically. I was so quiet that a pin dropped could be heard. When I reached the bottom, I felt my heart in my throat. I just had to switch on the lights. Taking a deep breath, I slammed on the lights to catch the culprit, Casey. I found her head buried in the trashcan, searching for the steak bones I had thrown out at dinner. She had tried to sneak out while I was asleep to sneak a late night snack. The first time, my loud movements had scared her so in her desperate escape, she ran to the closet to hide. This time, she was unable to hear me coming. I smiled and patted her on the head and she sheepishly looked at me. What a smart dog!
