Bruce Tuckman created a model in the 1960's called the sequential stage theory. Initially his theory contained four stages; forming, norming, storming, and performing. The model is often described with just these four stages. However, Tuckman later added a fifth stage he called adjourning. The forming stage is where it all begins. The team comes together for the first time and there can be a great deal of uncertainty. Members aren't sure how to behave, they may not be clear on the purpose of their task, and they don't know the other members. Ice breaker exercises are a commonly used method to help members get to know one another and relax a bit. Ice breakers can be fun and speed up the getting to know you process. This is one element of team building that can be beneficial and allow individuals to get to know each other.

Have you ever participated in an ice breaker? Share your experience. How effective was it?
