Behavioural Sciences Assignment-

Part A:

1. Discuss the positive and negative aspects of conformity.

2. Discuss the positive and negative aspects of autonomy.

Part B:

Provide four examples using your own observations of the behaviour of others' visible attitudes, thoughts, behaviours and feelings, in addition to your own thoughts feelings and behaviours, explain the ways they relate to social psychology. Make note of the observation/example, then discuss and explain how these observations are relevant or demonstrate concepts in social psychology.

The objective of the assignment is for you to begin to think like a social psychologist, to observe your surroundings and determine how social psychological analyses have the potential to help you better understand what you observe.

Following are some examples so you understand what to look for:

  • If you go out for lunch see how people are sitting in relation to each other. Are they grouped by race, gender or some other group category? Are attractive people with similarly attractive friends?
  • Observe differing leadership styles at work.
  • Is a friend or close colleague behaving differently than normal or in a way that conflict with previously observed attitudes?
  • At a party observe the effects of drinking on behaviour.

Make sure you note: What does social psychological theory state about these topics? If so, what do they say? Are your observations compared to or in contrast with what social psychological theory states? Explain why your observation is an illustration of that concept.
