The Challenge / Scenario:

As a follow-up to our 9/27 discussion on What Can Go Wrong/Risk Management here is your challenge:

YOU are the MLB Commissioner. You oversee League decisions, working closely with your stakeholders, owners, players, broadcast partners, fans, etc. to ensure your brand is viewed in the best possible light at all times.

CRISIS: Your advisors are keeping you updated about a terrible rain and thunder storm forecast for next week's WILD CARD PLAYOFF game in New York (Yankees host game on Wednesday Oct. 3rd in the Bronx). A decision to postpone the game is a difficult one due to the compressed / predetermined playoff schedule that follows: Divisional playoff round for the American League begins on Oct. 5th.

While your primary goal is focused on PREVENTION of any delays due to the planned / optimal broadcast schedule set months ago, you cannot afford to force a compromised event that negatively impacts fans/attendees in conditions that might impact the outcome of this critical, signature event for MLB. The team is taking a full scale look at all of the potential hazards you might encounter.

FIRST: Identify your top 3 concerns regarding stakeholder impact. Prioritize these three concerns (A, B and C) to determine your best course of action as your team works toward the optimal solution. Remember, a stakeholder is anyone with a vested interest in this event, financial or otherwise.

SECOND: Attack the top TWO areas you have identified (A and B) above. Give us one paragraph on what you and your team have put together as YOUR COMMUNICATIONS PLAN. Tell us in general terms what resources you will employ. For example, reaching 50,000 fans just hours before the game.

HELPFUL HINTS: Refer to the myriad of things we discussed that COULD go wrong, in this case weather, prioritize your action steps and attack your top two. There are no wrong answers. Thoughtful and insightful preventative measures will suffice here. Expense additions would have to be accounted for no matter where or what major event it was. We are simply asking you to be mindful of that.
