Based on this week's readings and assignments, review the following. Although collective bargaining negotiations often take weeks or even months of preparation and more weeks to achieve a satisfactory settlement, even a hypothetical situation can give some insight to collective bargaining. The purpose of this exercise is to give you a brief opportunity to experience collective bargaining. See page 240 in the Niles text to help you.

Students with last names ending in A-M, you will be the union workers. Students with last names ending in N-Z, you will be management. At the end of this collective bargaining debate, one team will be declared the winner and the other team the loser. If no agreement is reached, both teams lose the collective bargaining. (Credit is awarded for participating in this discussion.) The facilitator serves as arbiter.

After your initial message of 200-300 words in which you state your case, each team is encouraged to move toward a "win-win" solution in your reply messages.

Issues:

  • The union's last money demand was for a $3 raise; management's last offer was for $1.
  • Management also wants the right to assign weekend shifts and overtime as it sees fit and to promote workers on merit, not seniority.
  • The union objects to these ideas and wants a fully paid health insurance plan that is paid now completely by the workers.

Reply according to discussion board policy.
