In the discussion board participation with classmates is required and is included in the grading process.
Thoughtful participation in the class Discussion Board is an essential part of fostering an active, online learning community. The Discussion Board is the equivalent to in-class participation; therefore if you fail to participate actively in a discussion board and follow the provided guidelines, it is the equivalent to being absent in a class. Using the Discussion Board is an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion while applying learned concepts and theories. You are expected to be active and to apply critical thinking skills to each of your posts. Your postings will be reviewed and graded as a total package at the end of the week. The rubric is not meant to be nit-picky; rather a guide to raise the level of discussion beyond "I think technology is bad." or "I disagree." There will be graded discussion boards throughout the course; one per unit containing an introduction, discussion, closing, and references in addition to meeting the course requirements.
Discussion Board criteria are:
• Active/Timely Participation = 2 (or more) postings + 2 (or more) responses in each Discussion Question to colleagues at different times in the week before midnight Sunday. Initial post should be no later than Thursday evening. (i.e. A posting to answer each Discussion Board Assignment and 2 or more participations are required in each Discussion Board assignment.)
- Professional Communication=standard written English; correct spelling/punctuation
- Attention to all parts of question(s) asked
• Critical Thinking/extending information=logical thought based on connections to experience, research, readings etc. Use Critical Thinking and Bloom's Taxonomy skills (see Bloom's Taxonomy information here: Bloom's Taxonomy Overview).
- Course connections = references to readings/activities, references, and citations
The essay to include:
- an Introduction section - With heading centered without Bold text
- a Description section - With heading centered with Bold text
- a Conclusion section - With heading centered with Bold text
- a Reference section per APA requirements - With heading centered with Bold text
- type face throughout Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier. With black type only per APA
- type face size12 pt per APA
In addition, academic writing requirements apply including:
- proper spelling
- proper grammar
- left justified paragraphs
- elimination of contractions
- clear, concise, and complete sentence structure
- single spacing
- Proper essay structure that includes an Introduction section including a Level1
centered heading, Discussion section including a Level1 centered and bold text
heading, a Conclusion section including a Level 1 centered and bold text heading, a
References section as the last page of the essay and a Level1 centered and bold text
- use the word Paragraph Format tool where the first word of each paragraph is .50 inches from
left border
