Background

A simple scan of any day's news headlines will usually identify at least one instance where Information Technology has been used inappropriately, or where people within the IT industry have acted unprofessionally. A cynical observer might be tempted to conclude that notions of professionalism and ethical behaviour may be important concepts for those studying IT, but when it comes to everyday practice they do not matter. In this assignment you are asked to explore a range of issues around IT Professionalism through a process of research, analysis, and critical discussion and to develop your own conclusions.

The Assessment Question:

Based upon your reading of quality literature, desk research, the module content and discussion you are asked to write the following paper:
Use an examination of the views of expert academics and a sample of real world case studies to support a discussion of the role and importance of Professionalism and Professional Ethics in the Information Technology industry.

Your analysis should take into account a range of stakeholder opinions and include evidence where appropriate. The paper should conclude with your views on the question, based upon your analysis and discussion.

The structure is for you to decide, but it should contain three elements:
· Literature Review - a description of what is said in the academic and professional literature about this issue. A list of recommended reading is attached below.

· Analysis -a critical examination and discussion of the issues and different opinions, including what was said during classes where appropriate. Your analysis should focus on the four professional modalities (Social, Legal, Ethical and Professional). You are encouraged to make use of an appropriate analytical framework. Guidance will be provided during the module classes.

· Conclusion - your considered opinion based upon the review of the literature and your assessment of the range of viewpoints discussed in the Analysis.

You may also wish to include a short reflection on how what you have has been learned relates to your own experience and professional ambitions You should apply academic disciplines and methods in writing the paper. Detailed guidance will be provided in class.

The paper should be about 2500 - 3000 words, fully referenced showing all external sources.
The marking criteria will assess the content, quality, and application of academic method to each of the three parts described above.
